The 2017 Books I’m Excited For

As 2016 officially comes to a close, we inevitably look toward the upcoming year and all its possibilities. And, in true bibliophile fashion, I’m looking forward to reading a lot of (hopefully) good books. 🙂

In chronological order, here are all the books coming out in 2017 that I’m most excited for.

RoseBlood by A. G. Howard
Released on Janary 10, 2017

While the Splintered series wasn’t one I loved as much as my peers, Howard definitely offered an intriguing spin on Wonderland in that series, and, since I’m a Phantom junkie, I’m very excited to see what she does with a Phantom of the Opera retelling. January can’t come soon enough; I want to touch this gorgeous, gorgeous cover with my own bare hands!

 

 

 

Frostblood (Frostblood Saga, #1) by Elly Blake
Released on Janary 10, 2017

I’ll admit that this book does sound like others we’ve seen before: class system segregated by blood, the protagonist is part of the oppressed race, her powers help make her the face of a rebellion, tournaments pitting one class against another. But I’m intrigued by the “fire versus ice” concept, and I’d like to see what Blake can do with it.

 

 

 

Carve the Mark (Untitled, #1) by Veronica Roth
Released on Janary 17, 2017

Though Allegiant was a disappointment, I really enjoyed the Divergent series overall, and I can’t wait to see what Roth writes next. My excitement only increased when I learned Roth was in the process of writing a Star Wars-inspired duology. Early reviews seem favorable, the premise is interesting, and the cover is very shiny, so I’m super, super psyched for Carve the Mark (and the Divergent short I’ll receive because I preordered it 😉 ). Again–hurry up, January!

 

 

Caraval (Untitled, #1) by Stephanie Garber
Released on Janary 31, 2017

I’ve nothing but amazing things about this book, so I can’t wait to read it and see what all the fuss is about! Plus, the premise sounds enthralling: a tale about sisterhood and an enchanted show just as dangerous as it is magical. Give me this book!

 

 

 

 

Silver Stars (Soldier Girl, #2) by Michael Grant
Released on Janary 31, 2017

I love books about WWII, and I enjoyed Soldier Girl (an alternate history novel exploring the possibilities of a WWII where women were allowed to enlist) a lot, so I’m looking forward to getting reacquainted with Rio, Frangie, Rainy, and everyone else in their respective groups. I’m ready for more!

 

 

 

 

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza
Released on February 7, 2017

While I haven’t read Game of Thrones–which contains a character a lot of people are comparing this book’s protagonist to–I’m a sucker for space (see: my reviews of Illuminae and Gemina), and the idea of royalty in space makes this sound even cooler (if that was possible). Plus, I’m loving the cover’s color scheme. So beautiful!

 

 

 

Rise of Fire (Reign of Shadows, #2) by Sophie Jordan
Released on February 7, 2017

I really enjoyed Reign of Shadows (I almost devoured it in one sitting), and I want more! I’m ready for more about Relhok and Luna and Fowler and the creepy, dark (quite literally) kingdom Jordan has created. Definitely a book I’m excited for.

 

 

 

 

 

Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
Released on February 7, 2017

One of these days, I plan on writing a Labyrinth retelling, so I can’t wait to read this. In my opinion, goblins don’t get nearly enough page time in YA fantasy, so seeing Jae-Jones’s interpretation of both Goblin King and his underlings–as well her spin on Labyrinth–is something I really look forward to. Another highly-anticipated read.

 

 

 

The Last of August (Charlotte Holmes, #2) by Brittany Cavallaro
Released on February 14, 2017

It looks like I finally have a reason to look forward to St. Valentine’s Day, hahaha. I love the original Sherlock Holmes series, and I was so happy to discover that I loved the first book in this Sherlock retelling series just as much; A Study in Charlotte was the only 2016 book I read in one day, and I couldn’t get enough. I love Jamie and Charlotte’s relationship, and I can’t wait to see what adventures their sleuthing takes them on next. This is high on the list of my most anticipated reads for 2017! 🙂

 

Gilded Cage (Dark Gifts, #1) by Vic James
Released on February 14, 2017

Now that I’m studying history more in-depth this year in school, I have a newly-found fascination with the dynamics between the aristocracy and the “common” people (including the servants in the aristocrats’ houses). So the idea of aristocrats with magic? That sounds super cool. Also, the cover is lovely. I’m hoping this is one I enjoy. And who knows? Maybe I’ll be able to connect some newly-acquired historical knowledge to what I’m reading. 😀

 

 

Ronit & Jamil by Pamela L. Laskin
Released on February 21, 2017

This is one of my most-anticipated reads of 2017. I possess Syrian heritage, and a lot of my social circles include individuals living in the Middle East, so I’m well aware of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the West Bank. I haven’t read the original Romeo and Juliet (yet), but this is such an important story to tell, and I’m very, very excited to see what Laskin does with it, as it’s a story that resonates with me personally.

 

 

Long May She Reign by Rhiannon Thomas
Released on February 21, 2017

Whenever I read a YA fantasy novel about a teen girl coming into power as a monarch, I always think, “I’d never be able to rule; I’m not cut out for it.” And this story looks to be about another girl who’s not really the ruling type–a girl who was never meant to be queen, but ends up in that position anyway. I can’t wait to read Freya’s story; I’m really hoping I’ll be able to relate to her. 🙂

 

 

 

Hunted (Hunted, #1) by Meagan Spooner
Released on March 14, 2017

I can never get enough of Beauty and the Beast retellings, and I’ve enjoyed the installments I’ve read in the Starbound trilogy (which she co-authored), so I’m looking forward to see some of Spooner’s solo work.

 

 

 

 

Nemesis by Brendan Reichs
Released on March 14, 2017

This book sounds so cool, you guys; it’s about a girl named Min who gets killed several every two years on her birthday,  but then wakes up the next day just fine. I’m loving that cover, too. I can’t wait to find out why Min keeps “dying”–and somehow still survives.

 

 

 

 

A Crown of Wishes (The Star-Touched Queen, #2) by Roshani Chokshi
Released on March 28, 2017

I enjoyed The Star-Touched Queen more than I’d expected to; though many felt the prose was so purple, it was bruised, I found it lush and descriptive (even if it was over-the-top sometimes). As soon as I heard there would be a companion novel about Gauri, Maya’s friend, I got excited; the premise sounds really cool. I also was fortunate enough to win an ARC of this book, so I can’t wait to dive in to Chokshi’s prose again. 🙂

 

 

Blood Rose Rebellion (Blood Rose Rebellion, #1) by Rosalyn Eves
Released on March 28, 2017

Magic and a fantasy containing Hungarian history. Sounds cool, right? I think so, too.

Though this book sounds a lot like Red Queen and Frostblood with the “different bloods rule society” idea, I’m hoping it’ll be enjoyable and original.

 

 

 

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas
Released on May 2, 2017

This is probably in on my list of Top 5 Most Anticipated 2017 releases. I liked ACOTAR, but I loved ACOMAF, and I’m waiting with bated breath for this one.

Be good to me, Sarah J. Maas. Please. Trilogies never end well for me.

(Bonus: I’m also excited for the ACOTAR coloring book, coming out on June 27. I can’t wait to see other artists’ illustrations/interpretations of Maas’s fascinating world.)

 

Once and for All by Sarah Dessen
Released on June 6, 2017

Though I’ve started to notice the repetition in Dessen’s novels, I’ve heard her story behind writing this one and the struggle that went into creating it, and, as a writer, I can relate to that. I’ve also heard this might be Sarah Dessen’s last YA novel, the one she “didn’t know [she] had in [her].” So I’m going to read this, and I hope I enjoy it.

 

 

 

Our Dark Duet (Monsters of Verity, #2) by Victoria Schwab
Released on June 13, 2017

This is the final novel in Schwab’s Monsters of Verity duology, and I can’t wait (read: am very anxious) to see how it ends. Despite its slow start, This Savage Song was one of my favorite 2016 reads, and I look forward to seeing the conclusion of Kate and August’s story. Schwab has such a magical way with words, and I’m ready to be immersed in the world of Verity once again.

Now I Rise (The Conquerer’s Saga, #2) by Kiersten White
Released on June 27, 2017

I was impressed–and surprised–by the brutal thistle that was And I Darken. The writing was stellar, and I loved the way White retold the story of Vlad Dracul through a girl’s eyes. So, needless to say, I’m definitely excited for the sequel, Now I Rise (and its pretty cover).

 

 

 

 

Wonder Woman: Warbringer (DC Icons) by Leigh Bardugo
Released on August 29, 2017

Though Bardugo’s not releasing a new fantasy novel in 2017 (*cries*) and I’m not too into comics/superheroes, I’ll give this one a go because she wrote it, and she’s one of my favorite authors. Hoping I’ll like it!

 

 

 

 

Untitled (The Thousandth Floor, #2) by Katharine McGee
Released on August 29, 2017

No cover or title for this book yet, but The Thousandth Floor ended on a pretty intense cliff-hanger, and I really enjoyed that book, so I’m excited to witness the newest scandals futuristic NYC’s elites have to offer.

The Color Project by Sierra Abrams
Released on November 1, 2017

Contemporaries are not normally my thing. But this book totally sounds like my thing: sweet and heartfelt and meaningful.

I also had the pleasure to meet Sierra at a book signing several months ago, and she’s lovely. I’m looking forward to a fantastic novel by a fantastic person! 🙂

Warcross (Warcross, #1) by Marie Lu

The Legend trilogy was fun, but The Young Elites disappointed me. Warcross sounds really interesting (virtual reality! Heck, yes!), and I’m hoping third time’s a charm.

Again, it’s Marie Lu, and Batman is…well, Batman. How could I say no?

 

Helix (Replica, #2) by Lauren Oliver

I liked Replica, and I’m interested in continuing the series. 🙂 More clones and more secrecy, please!
